Shoemaker and barber
sit beneath identical umbrellas
that ward off the sun
and announce their trades
Where the road
winding from India rises,
the road weary
turn to them in their constant need
While the city dweller
tethers his life
to the bridge and its traffic,
the barber from the plains
has only tales
to gather and tell
The shoemaker is silent
and barefoot; the garrulous barber
needs a shave
